What we see in Toowoomba CBD

The CBD is a different beast to working out in the newer estates. When you're pulling up to a job on Ruthven Street or somewhere near the Empire Theatre, you're often walking into a building that's been through three or four different uses over the past century. That heritage fabric is worth protecting, but it does mean the wiring behind those walls can tell some interesting stories — and not always good ones.

Above-shop apartments catch people off guard the most. Tenants move in not realising they're sharing a switchboard with the café downstairs, or that the three-phase supply feeding the commercial kitchen two floors below is running through the same conduit as their unit. It creates headaches when something trips and nobody's quite sure whose problem it is.

The older commercial buildings near City Hall and Queens Park are similar — beautiful from the outside, but the electrical infrastructure inside can be genuinely patchy. Layers of work done over decades by who knows how many different tradies. You learn pretty quickly not to assume anything until you've actually traced it yourself.
